Read my blog....

And remember that I am still learning French too, so there may be some mistakes.. but that’s ok !

If you’re reading this, you have probably seen my profile, so you’ll know that normalement (normally) I study French and German at Bangor University. During the first semester of this year, from août à decembre (August to December), I spent my time in France, at Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3. Lyon is the second (or third, depending who you ask) city in France, and is located close to the French Alps and the borders of Switzerland and Italy. It is a very historic city and is very beautiful.

Before I went to France, one of the most important things I had to do was choose somewhere to live. There are many options, like in the UK. A lot of international and Erasmus students choose to live in Student Halls of Residences, like they do in the UK, because they are cheap, and located all over the city and most of the time, they are close to the university (la fac). They are also a great way to meet other students, and a great way to make new friends (amis, copains, potes). There is also the option to live in a shared flat, or as the French say, une colocation. This was interesting to me, but the one problem I had was being unable to see the flat, or meet my “could be colocataires” (flatmates) beforehand.

During my time in France, I met some very amazing people, and I made a great bande d’amis (group of friends) with people from tout quatres coins du monde (All over the globe). I made French friends who are very special and fidèle (loyal), that I can’t wait to visit as soon as possible. I made friends that are now back in their home countries. In this day and age, we’re lucky that technology is so advanced, so that we are able to catch up with each other, just like you’re doing now. Skype, Facebook and Instagram all allow us to keep in contact, and relive the special things we did. A great way to socialise in Lyon and to meet students, is to sit by the river (Rhône) in the evening. On Thursday nights, a lot of students go there to drink with their friends and play games. I found that by doing this, it was a great way to meet new French friends, and practice speaking French.

That’s all for this months entry everyone. I hope that you all enjoyed reading my first blog post. See you soon for a new entry !

A bientôt tout le monde !

Elliot

Food and Drink

Lyon is extremely famous for its food. It is home to very traditional restaurants (un bouchon lyonnais) which can be found in various places all over the city. The most famous places are in Vieux Lyon, or Rue Mercière. These restaurants are well known for serving traditional French food, and specifically traditional food from Lyon. The food is historic, hearty and is well known for being something that feels and tastes like it is home cooked, or from someone’s mother, as the French would say. There was a group of woman in the 18th century who were famous for making extremely good food, which are now called “Les Mères Lyonnaises”. If you are interested in learning more about these women, then you can search for more information online!

When we think of France, and in particular French food, there are certain things that come to mind.. baguettes, cheese and wine etc. and of course all of these things are easy to find in France. Lyon is packed full of bakeries (boulangeries) and cheese shops (fromageries). You can find them tucked away on small alleyways or on the main roads. There are even bakeries inside the metro stations for you to buy bread during your daily commute. One thing I learned in France is that it is not strange in France to eat a dry baguette on the metro, and I witnessed that a few times!

Normally, dinner starts with ‘hors d’oeuvres’, which are light snacks that are normally served with an ‘aperitif’ which is a small glass of wine served with crème de cassis to make it pink and sweeter. Then, the main course is normally served, which is either meat or fish. Following the main course comes salad and vegetables to make things slightly healthier, as the meat or fish is sometimes served with a rich sauce. After this part, the cheese comes. Most families serve cheese after dinner as a dessert.

The mix of different cultures and foods in Lyon really gives everyone who visits the city an amazing opportunity to have their favourite French food, or even try something new and different. There are so many types of things to see and try which makes the area very special.

Tübingen and Local Region

Hallo und Willkommen in meinem Blog! Diese ist mein erste Blogpost auf Deutsch. Für alle, die neu sind.. Hallo!

Tübingen is a University city with approximately 30,000 students, meaning that 1 in 3 people living here is a student. The University itself is called Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen and was founded in 1477 and is one of the oldest in Germany. It is very large and spread out over the city, including the University Clinics. It is a renowned university in Germany for it’s Medical and Philosophical faculties. The old town (Altstadt) is one of the best kept in Germany, due to the fact that Tübingen was a hospital city during the Second World War so avoided the bombings, leaving the city mostly in tact.

Also, close by to Tübingen is the Black Forest (Der Scwarzwald). The Black Forest is the largest forest in Baden-Württemberg. It is named after the dark colour of the trees that grow there. It is a very famous place in Germany for people to go exploring in nature and hiking, as it is one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Germany. The highest peak is Feldberg that is 1493m tall, and is the highest German mountain outside of the Alps. The Danube river runs through many major cities in Europe and also through the Black Forest. The most common activities that take place in the Black Forest are hiking and cycling in summer and downhill skiing in winter. Three very famous fairytales are also set in the Black Forest. Hansel and Gretel, Snow White and Rapunzel are all based inside the forest. Also, a very famous cake that may be well known to some of the readers originates from here - Black Forest Gateau (Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte).

As you can see, Tübingen and the local region is a fantastic place to study as an Erasmus student. The area offers a lot to do, see and explore and the town itself is full of interesting places, shops, cafés and bars to enjoy.

Danke fürs Lesen! Bis zum nächsten Mal!

Environment

Hallo zusammen!

Tübingen is a very green city. The majority of the population of the city is students. Nowadays, students are very interested in politics and the environment is a major factor in todays politics. As you are probably all aware, the environment is a hot topic right now, and it is our duty to actively try and slow down global warming to stop the effects that it is having on the earth. One of the best ways that we can do that is recycling.

In Deutschland muss man ihren Mull trennen.

There is another way to recycle in Germany that is extremely efficient and helpful. The Pfand system allows people to recycle plastic bottles, glass bottles and cans, AND receive money for doing so. The money comes as a voucher and can be used to buy groceries in the supermarket.

A plastic bottle and a metal can are both worth €0.25, and a glass bottle is worth €0.08. It doesn’t seem like a lot, but when you start to save bottles and cans and take them to recycle all at once, you start to see that recycling can take a lot of money off of your total bill at the check out, and it’s a great way to save the planet.

If you are ever in Germany and buy a drink, look out for the symbol on the bottle, which will tell you if you can get some money back for it!

That is all for this month’s blog post! I hope that you enjoyed reading and learned something interesting about the environment in Germany!

Don’t forget to use your bottles for Pfand when you visit.

See you on the next one!
